Mai: “Documenting Northern Thai Photography”

photographers in northern Thailand have documented people, places and
events through portraiture, landscape and event photography for the
purposes of documentation, memorialization and journalism. Photography
was one of the most successful of western techniques to be imported
into Thailand in the 19th century. The talk will focus upon the work of
Luang Anusarn, Boonserm Satrabhaya and photographers from Lampang,
Phrae and Nan.
Poonpipat is professor of photography and head of the Media Arts
Department in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Chiang Mai University. He
studied photography at the Academy of Arts in San Francisco. He is
director of the House of Photography, located at the Three Kings
monument. It is a project between Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai
city administration and the Arts and Cultural Center, established to
share the work of photographers from the region through the 20th
century to the present day. It also features the artistic and cultural
heritage of Lanna through the use of photography as an archival and
educational resource. All photographs are digitalized and catalogued.
